Cam Newton completed 26-of-46 passes for 312 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in the Panthers’ 41-38, Week 6 loss to the Saints. “The victor was going to have to make plays down the stretch”, said Peyton.
Saints quarterback Drew Brees throws for 465 yards against the Carolina Panthers.
The loss was the fourth in a row for Carolina as the defending NFC champion fell to 1-5. Another field goal would have put it in overtime at NY, which managed to win 16-13. Brandin Cooks wound up gaining 173 yards on just seven catches by routinely torching the secondary and getting behind everyone. But things were going so well for Brees and the Saints’ passing offense that they declined the penalty, since Brees wound up throwing an 8-yard touchdown pass to tight end Josh Hill anyway. “Seems the D-linemen can’t get to him because the ball is already out”.
The Panthers fans will tell you, though, their quarterback is more than a cookie, but even with a decimated defense, “fruit and cake” couldn’t do enough against the Saints.
Cam Newton doesn’t find this situation amusing at all.
That set up a two-point conversion try.
While Lutz came up short in the second quarter, he redeemed himself with a late game 52-yard field goal that put the Saints up for good with 11 seconds left on the clock. Brees found ten different receivers on the day, and had his 16th career 400-yard game of his career, which is an National Football League record. His numbers have been slightly down, the team’s record isn’t great, and he’s been banged up, so this year is a far cry from last year’s MVP campaign for Newton. However, they were able to fight back. Rivera channeled his inner Riverboat by going for two fourth downs (and converting both) on a second-half touchdown drive. Cornerback Zack Sanchez bit on a double move, giving Cooks an open pasture on his 87-yard score.
Funchess caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Newton and Carolina tight end Ed Dickson hauled in a 1-yard TD that Newton tossed as he scrambled to his left. Newton was coming off concussion protocol.
Newton ran the ball just twice but said he felt fine physically before and after the game. According to Pro Football Reference, Irving is just the fourth player since 1960 with three forced fumbles in a game.
Panthers answered with two touchdown scores, but a Graham Gano missed an extra point made the score 31-30 Saints.
“They did exploit some of our young guys, but you’re talking about a Hall of Fame quarterback”. Beyond Jordan, Fairley and Vaccaro, New Orleans also got strong performances from Kasim Edebali and Daryl Tapp at defensive end in relief of an injured Paul Kruger, along with rookie David Onyemata on the inside.
