The HSE said the newly-discovered Zika cases in Ireland are “not an unexpected event” as many other European countries have reported cases as a result of people travelling to affected areas. A causal relationship between the Zika virus and neurological disorders including microcephaly, which causes babies to be born with small heads, is strongly suspected, although it has not yet been confirmed.

American health officials in Texas say they’ve confirmed what appears to be the first case of Zika virus transmitted through sexual intercourse in the country.

The first locally transmitted case of Zika virus in the United States has been reported in a county in Texas, the county’s health department said Tuesday.

“It’s not a new disease in Thailand… we had the first confirmed case in 2012”. Health officials and Thompson noted that sexual partners can protect themselves by using condoms to prevent spreading sexually transmitted infections.

The explosive spread of the virus, which is linked to birth defects and is now at the centre of a public health crisis in South and Central America, has led the World Health Organisation to declare an worldwide emergency.

Earlier this week, Zika was designated a health emergency by the WHO.

The World Health Organization has estimated up to 4 million cases of Zika virus could spread across the Americas over the course of this year. These symptoms could last for a few days or up to week and will usually occur within a few days of becoming infected.

However, imported cases make local spread by mosquitoes possible because the mosquitoes that can transmit the virus are found locally. “Since then we have an average of not more than five cases yearly”, he said.

Zika virus can be transmitted from the mother to the baby during pregnancy. Those who do become ill typically have mild symptoms: fever, rash, headache, joint pain and pink eye, according to the WHO. Also, we are purchasing the necessary tests for detecting the Zika virus in a patient.

In 2008, a Colorado researcher reportedly caught the virus overseas and may have spread it to his wife when he returned to the U.S.

The mosquito-borne disease has been linked to thousands of birth defects in Brazil.
