But de Blasio noted that “early indications was that this was an intentional act”. The majority of the injuries are not life threatening, but one is serious. There aren’t many details available yet but New York Mayor Bill de Blasio made clear that the explosion was “an intentional act” and so far at least they haven’t found any connection to terrorism.

A potential second device was found near the site of the first explosion, the NYPD said on Twitter.

He said authorities did not know of a connection between the NY explosion and the bomb that exploded without hurting anyone earlier Saturday in New Jersey.

In St. Cloud, Minnesota, police said multiple people were injured at a shopping mall Saturday evening in an attack that possibly involved both a shooting and stabbing.

“But it is very, very early in the investigation”, Cuomo told reporters near the scene some 14 hours after the blast. The FBI and Homeland Security officials, along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arson and explosive task force, were all at the scene.

A dumpster blew up outside a 14-storey building, reportedly a home for blind people, the paper said. A spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in NY said investigators are examining the remnants of the device to determine how it was comprised, including whether it was real or fake.

Several subways in the area of 23rd Street have been shut as a precaution, authorities said.

President Barack Obama, who was attending a congressional dinner in Washington, “has been apprised of the explosion in New York City, the cause of which remains under investigation”, a White House official said. He added that the site of the blast, outside on a major thoroughfare in the fashionable New York City district, was being treated as a crime scene. The explosion happened around 8:30 p.m. ET in front of 131 West 23rd Street, between Sixth and Seventh avenues. The race had been running late, but authorities said they believed the device had been timed to explode as runners went by the trash bin.
