The search resumed Tuesday for an experienced skier missing near the Canyons Ski Resort since Sunday.
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office says 50-year-old Stephen Jones of Wanship, Utah, was found Tuesday afternoon after crews followed the signal from his avalanche beacon. His vehicle was still in the Cabriolet parking lot.
Search crews were concentrating Tuesday on two recent slides in the backcountry off the resort’s 99-90 ski lift.
“It appears that an avalanche was the cause of the burial”. It wasn’t until after 2 p.m. that they shifted their focus to the north-facing Shale Shot, where the Summit County Sheriff’s Office indicated an avalanche 60 feet wide had run for 500 feet. “He never went in unprepared for any given situation”.
Detective Kacey Bates had described Jones as a “very experienced and knowledgeable” skier.
“A solo day in the mountains doing 40 miles was just a workout for him”, Lloyd said.
Several members of the Summit County Search and Rescue team along with the Canyons ski patrol are working together and have searched both on property as well as the backcountry area using a multiple resources and technology to locate the missing individual.
